Possible robustness of intra-cortical microcirculation

Researchers from the Institut de Mécanique des Fluides (IMFT, CNRS / INPT / University of Toulouse) and the Centre de Recherche Cerveau et Cognition (CerCo, CNRS / University of Toulouse) have analysed the morpho-functional organisation of the cortical vascular network. They have found that although the arteries penetrating the cortex can be considered as the bottleneck of cortical perfusion, downstream vessels are supplied and drained by several neighbour vascular territories. This can therefore protect cerebral tissue from damage in case of vessel obstruction.
