The Brain and Cognition Research Center (CerCo) was founded in 1993 by Professor Michel Imbert and a core group of researchers who moved from Paris and Marseille. The unit was renewed with Michel Imbert as director in 1995. Subsequently, Jean Bullier was the director from 1998 to 2003, but he was then replaced as director by Michèle Fabre-Thorpe in 2003. After over 10 years with Michèle as director, Simon Thorpe took over as head of the laboratory in January 2014.

In 2011 the CerCo moved to new premises in The Pavillon Baudot of the Purpan Hospital.

The CerCo is a research unit attached
